Unveilining the Mystery of Pagan Veiling
What do you do when the Goddess leaves a trail of bread crumbs? You follow it, of course! Blissfully unaware of the path that is unfurling before you, you connect each dot, not realizing the picture you are drawing. This is how much of life unfolds, but what I'd like to talk about today is why I cover my hair.
It's a long story, and much of it is fuzzy, so I'll leave out some of the finer details.
I used to spend a lot of time watching beauty tutorials on YouTube. Over time, I began coming across more and more Muslim beauty bloggers. At this point, I was still under the [wrong] impression that Muslim women were forced to wear Hijab and that they were just making the best of it. Then I came across a video by a woman named Amena, and her video entitled "TAKE OFF YOUR HIJAB." She explained that it was HER CHOICE to wear a scarf. I did some research and learned that, contrary to what white folks are told, Muslim women DO get to choose, and that Hijab is not the scarf, it's self, but that it is a modest way of being; Muslim men also have to dress modestly!
Soon after this, I was also made aware of the Jewish practice of covering your hair after marriage. I did not know that this was something Jewish women did. I became infatuated with all of the beautiful styles of coverings! From the Hijab to the Tichel, there are so many gorgeous styles!
Through all this research it never occurred to me that this was something that I could do. I didn't belong to a religion or culture where covering was practiced. I didn't want to appropriate anyone's culture. One day, though, someone posted an article about Pagan veiling to a group that I was a part of. This group was kind of a negative place where people spent more time making fun of those who didn't practice as they did, rather than trying to see the beauty in our differences. The response to the article was overwhelmingly negative and nasty. That didn't deter me, though! I clicked the link to the article and promptly left the group!! I don't have time for negativity! I devoured that article and began searching for any and all information on the subject. I was severely underwhelmed with the lack of information on Pagan veiling, or any similar customs. Most of the links I found were broken, dead ends leading to long deleted blogs.
After soaking up what I could, I decided that I was going to fill in the blanks! I'm constantly meditating and contemplating EVERY part of my Pagan path, but particularly this one. I do not cover full time, and honestly, I feel the call much less than I did when I first started. I just know that this is still a big part of my life and I'm determined to figure out the why's as I go.
I'm planning on blogging about my journey as I walk it. I plan to share information as well as different ways you can wear a scarf. I GLADLY welcome questions, especially if you're thinking about veiling, your self, or even if you're just curious!!
